These women exemplify the classic “Final Girl” horror archetype to perfection.
Final Girl is a term for when a woman is the only person left alive at the end of a horror movie. As the only one left alive, she has to go up against whatever or whoever is killing everyone and stay alive.
So many classic horror movies, like Alien and Halloween, use this trope. But the idea of a “Final Girl” has also made it into the world of video games. Even though it doesn’t happen as often in games as it does in movies, it has still happened a lot of times. These are some of the most well-known cases.
Fliss – Man Of Medan
In Man Of Medan, your choices really do matter. So, you don’t have to have a Final Girl to finish the game, since any of the characters can live or die. The main people who are in danger are the protagonists, who are four friends and Fliss, the skipper they hired.
After being attacked and taken, they end up on a very scary ship, which drives everyone crazy and causes a lot of people to die. Even if everyone else on the ship dies, Fliss can get off the ship and kill the main bad guy on the way. But if she doesn’t escape on her own boat, she might get locked up afterward.
Clementine – The Walking Dead: Season One
Clementines is one of the youngest Final Girls in the first season of TellTale’s The Walking Dead. During the season, she is with a group of people trying to stay alive in a world where zombies, or “walkers,” are everywhere. Along the way, most of them die or get separated, so their numbers slowly go down.
Near the end, only young Clementine and Lee, who has been infected, are left. At some point, he either changes his mind or Clem kills him. No matter what happens, the child is left alone, but she manages to get away and find two friends she had lost before. The game is a little different from how Final Girl usually works because Clementine doesn’t have to fight a big bad guy. But Clem has everything else she needs to be a great Final Girl.
Morgan Yu – Prey
At the beginning of Prey, a game released in 2017, you can choose the gender of the main character, Morgan Yu. Morgan could be the Final Girl if you choose a girl. She works for TranStar Industries and is studying an alien species called Typhon, which quickly takes over the space station where the research is being done. The rest of Basket Random game is Morgan trying to figure out how to fix the problem.
There are several choices, but the one that is most like Final Girl is for Morgan to blow up the station and use an escape pod to get away from the Typhon. It’s not a perfect Final Girl situation because Morgan would have to kill everyone on the station who was still alive, which isn’t a typical Final Girl move.
Amanda Ripley – Alien: Isolation
One of the most famous Final Girls in history is Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies. In Alien: Isolation, that role is taken on by her daughter Amanda. This new Ripley is in a situation like the one her mother was in 15 years ago. This is because she is stuck with a Xenomorph on a space station.
During the game, this dangerous alien follows the woman around, and she has to use her brain to stay alive. So, it usually comes down to the old game of “hide and seek.” And Amanda seems to be better at hiding than most of the other people on the station, since some of them can’t stay hidden and end up being killed. Amanda makes it through the whole thing and sends the Xenomorph into space with a gunshot.
Sam Giddings – Until Dawn
In the book “Until Dawn,” the main characters are a group of young adults who go to a mountain lodge on the anniversary of the death of one of their friends. Things go very wrong for them there because they have to deal with a group of bloodthirsty Wendigos. As you go through the adventure, the choices you make affect who lives and who dies.
You can be left alone with Sam, who is a good person. Since she can’t die until the end of the story, her chances are pretty good. In the scene that puts her in the most danger, she is stuck in the lodge with several Wendigos. She gets the chance to run out of there and blow it up as she does so. By doing this, the woman kills everything inside, but she stays alive.
Jill Valentine – Resident Evil
The main women in the Resident Evil games often make it through dangerous situations, but most of them aren’t Final Girls. After all, they usually get by with other people. Still, Jill can be the only survivor in the original Resident Evil in a non-canon ending.
The Spencer Mansion incident is the thing she tries to live through. In the Mansion Incident, members of a special police force get trapped in a house full of zombies. If you don’t know much about Resident Evil, you might not know this. Most of them die while they are inside. This can include Chris Redfield and Barry Burton, which means that Jill is the only one who makes it out of the mansion alive. But before she can leave, she has to stop a big bad guy. Jill is a badass, so she is able to do this.
